I am a trained Artist practicing for more than 20 years. My works aim to evoke and unsettle certain expressions that are part of various discourses such as primitivism, femininity and masculinity; dominant and the submissive roles; through exploring powerful and the fragile dimensions of ideas through materials. My key agenda is to represent the ‘different’ , marginalized or the other side, the mystical stillness of existence, that allows a possibility to embrace the darkness of life.

Mixed Media: Exploration of humble materials and found objects unearthing the Eroticism in Outcast!!!

ARTIST STATEMENT

I have always been fascinated with the idea of fusing art with fashion to create a body of works where each piece has a story of its own that includes exquisite craftsmanship and unconventional materials, by transforming fashion to an applied art form and into an art form. Late Alexander McQueen’s masterful creations from the ‘The Savage Beauty’ have particularly inspired the process and aesthetics of my creations. Contemporary artist and fashion designers like Bart Hess and Iris Van Herpen have blurred all rules and their interdisciplinary approach of mixing various facets together has created a diverse practice that involves art, unconventional textiles/surfaces and textures, fashion, photography, videography etc. In the context of India, one of Vivan Sundaram’s most important projects namely Gagawaka and Postmortem (After Gagawaka) has provided me greater insight about the sheer mélange of fashion and art, taking us to a different world, giving objects a new meaning - ‘fashion from thrash’. The project I did at the Frankfurt Style Awards has really inspired me to render motion in a garment that led to the birth of the acrylic moulded skirt, which was transparent and had two electric fans with thermocol balls filled inside. With the motion of wind, the balls started revolving around the skirt, almost giving an affect of kinetic artwork and adding a certain performativity to it, like eruption of agitated souls. During my graduation collection at National Institute of Fashion Technology, I wanted to bring in elements from mythical universe and its rituality that primarily centers around the concept of destruction and death, as we find in the figures of Bhairava and Aghoris . This also evokes a dualism of pain and peace at the same time. Through the usage of materials such as ropes, cowdung, sponge, paper, bangles, foot matt etc various textures on the fabric or otherwise are created to unearth the beauty that lies in the materiality of raw, household and found objects. My works aim to evoke and unsettle certain expressions that are part of various discourses such as primitivism, femininity and masculinity; dominant and the submissive roles; through exploring powerful and the fragile dimensions of ideas through materials. In my art practice and in several creations my key agenda is to represent the ‘different’ or the other side, that goes against the conventional notions of beauty and life, that allows a possibility to embrace the darkness of life.
